Staying Warm and Dry
FallAs the temperatures drop and the leaves change, fall can be one of the best times of year for cycling. However, staying warm and dry is key to enjoying those crisp, scenic rides. Here are the essentials you need to keep comfortable on the bike this fall.
Layering is Key
In fall, the weather can be unpredictable. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin. Add a thermal long-sleeve jersey for warmth and a lightweight, windproof jacket to block the chill. Layers allow you to easily adjust to changing temperatures throughout your ride.
Waterproof Gear
Autumn means rain showers are more likely. A good-quality waterproof jacket and pants are essential for staying dry. Look for breathable fabrics that keep water out without trapping heat. Don’t forget waterproof shoe covers to protect your feet from splashes on wet roads.
Insulated Gloves and Socks
Cold fingers and toes can ruin a ride. Invest in insulated, windproof gloves that still allow you to grip the handlebars comfortably. Wool or thermal socks will help keep your feet warm, especially on chilly mornings or evening rides.
Protect Your Head and Face
Consider a thermal skull cap that fits under your helmet to keep your head warm, along with a neck gaiter or buff to protect your face from wind and cold air. Some cyclists prefer clear or lightly tinted glasses to shield their eyes from debris and rain.
Lights and Reflective Gear
With shorter days, visibility is crucial. Make sure you have front and rear lights on your bike, even if you’re riding during the day. Add reflective tape or wear reflective clothing to ensure drivers and other cyclists can see you clearly.
